Born in Mexico City in 1961, Alfonso Cuarón learned the ropes in Mexico's TV and film industry after being expelled from film school.
His first full-length film, Sólo con tu pareja (1991), led to opportunities to direct Hollywood features, though it was a return to his Spanish-language roots with Y tu mamá también (2001) that brought him international fame.
